Beers I Have Known: Miller High Life

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. Because I was young once. And not every decision was sound. On the other hand, had my sips of Miller High Life taken place at the Beer Hut, I don’t think a single person could disparage my choice. Beers I Have Known: Toppling Goliath Mornin’ Delight

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. The weekend just past was profoundly memorable for me, even the part that found me engaging in a pastime known clouding one’s recollection. I was one of thousands in attendance at the 30th annual Great Taste of the Midwest, a beer fest of colossal proportions. Were I more adept at describing the cascade of sensations that wash across the tongue when particularly vibrant and delectable potables are sampled, I could probably write a … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: Toppling Goliath Mornin’ Delight

I thought it was a dream, but I know I seen him standing there

There are many balloon animal Jesuses (Jesi?), but this one is mine: When one adopts a technique of filling the blog hole with pictures of balloons rendered into the shape of Jesus Christ on the day that words won’t come (or there’s simply not time to write properly), then one is likely to get an inflated surprise on one’s birthday. This post is the sixty-third in a series. Continue reading I thought it was a dream, but I know I seen him standing there

Laughing Matters: Tina Fey, “Bitches Get Stuff Done”

Sometimes comedy illuminates hard truths with a pointed urgency that other means can’t quite achieve. Sometimes comedy is just funny. This series of posts is mostly about the former instances, but the latter is valuable, too. Tina Fey doesn’t especially care for the segment she co-wrote and delivered which is alternately called “Bitch is the New Black.” As recounted in her book Bossypants, it was a piece that came together at the last minute, intended to be a consideration of the greater scrutiny and ready dismissal, driven by gender, that Hilary Clinton faced during her 2008 run for the presidency. I … Continue reading Laughing Matters: Tina Fey, “Bitches Get Stuff Done”

Beers I Have Known: Point Brewery Classic Amber Lager

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. I live in a place where we pay for things with beer. The sudsy goodness hasn’t fully and completely taken the place of currency in the state of Wisconsin, but it’s an imaginable outcome. For now, beer is simply the prime commodity in the congenial barter system that guides most personal transactions, from helping someone move to acquiring some previously prized belonging that’s been relegated to a dusty corner of the garage. Or, … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: Point Brewery Classic Amber Lager

Beers I Have Known: Stone Brewing Arrogant Bastard Ale

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. When I first moved to Asheville, North Carolina, the hours of my job were quite demanding, especially on the weekends. Every once in a while, as I toiled away on some Friday or Saturday night responsibility, I got joyful, needling dispatches from those who were engaged in happy tomfoolery out and about. There were friends down from Wisconsin on one of those occasions, and they were taking on the town with my partner-in-all-things. Among their stops was … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: Stone Brewing Arrogant Bastard Ale

The Art of the Sell: “Limousines for Your Feet”

These posts celebrate the movie trailers, movie posters, commercials, print ads, and other promotional material that stand as their own works of art.  I can’t overstate the primacy of Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars in my day-to-day fashion choices. My default icon on social media outlets provides some insight as to dominance of the footwear brand on the lower level of my closet. Accordingly, I have a perpetual weakness for the various print ads over the years that promoted the brand, largely because of how ridiculously off-base they often were. Few please me more than the mid-eighties campaign that posited Chucks … Continue reading The Art of the Sell: “Limousines for Your Feet”

Beers I Have Known: 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Flying Tigersault and Perched Atop the Denim Throne

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. I am a mediocre beer hunter. I admit this fact with humility and a dollop of shame. Though I take woozy delight in a artfully crafted beer, I am woeful when it comes to holding relevant details in my head about those concoctions that should be chased. I am a willing and eager wingman for those cohorts with encyclopedic knowledge of the breweries and their beers that are simultaneously great and elusive, and therefore … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: 3 Floyds Brewing Co. Character Sturdy: An Introduction

Recently, I was prompted to think again about authorship. More specifically, I thought about how often I devote ample digital column inches in this space to considerations of pop culture that make a presumption about specific visions. Those visions are sometimes collaborative, but they almost always reside within a confined framework. When I write about comic books, I stick to single issues or runs on a title by a set of creators. When I write about television, I lock in on one season, weighing it against others only as a comparison that helps me assign a superlative. I chose those two … Continue reading Character Sturdy: An Introduction
