Beers I Have Know: Bur Oak Brewing Company Clyde’s Caramel Cream Ale

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. Sure, any time I walk on down the hill and maybe buy a beer, I naturally think about my friends and wish they lived out here. But, as I’ve discovered from my own residential wanderings, there is a distinct benefit to having beloved compatriots scattered across our national geography. For one thing, visits can include some sudsy explorations. We broke a longstanding household rule and took to the roadways over the long holiday weekend, … Continue reading Beers I Have Know: Bur Oak Brewing Company Clyde’s Caramel Cream Ale

Beers I Have Known: Wedge Brewing Iron Rail IPA

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. Over the most recent weekend, I found myself back in my former place of residence that still answers to the nickname Beer City, U.S.A. While I had limited time and far more pressing matters than reacquainting myself with favorite brews, I did find myself one night back at the best brewery in town: Wedge Brewing Company. To my amazement, this output of sudsy goodness that has long insisted on taking their growth as slowly as … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: Wedge Brewing Iron Rail IPA

Laughing Matters: Robin Williams, “The Invention of Golf”

Sometimes comedy illuminates hard truths with a pointed urgency that other means can’t quite achieve. Sometimes comedy is just funny. This series of posts is mostly about the former instances, but the latter is valuable, too. If you’d asked me when I was younger to identify my favorite comedian, I would have snapped off “Robin Williams” without hesitation. My age was still a single digit when Williams stepped into his star-making appearance on Happy Days, so I was precisely the right age to respond to his joyous anarchy. This was a guy whose stand-up showstopper centered on an Elmer Fudd impression. Of … Continue reading Laughing Matters: Robin Williams, “The Invention of Golf”

Beers I Have Known: Hinterland Brewery Bourbon Barrel Doppelbock

This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another. As I’ve relocated from Beer City USA to my native state, where cheery consumption of the potable in question is practically written into the bylaws, I’m pleased to discover that one thing remains consistently true: any week designated for a sudsy celebration lasts longer than seven days. I and my partner-in-all-things are on the other end of our very first Madison Craft Beer Week, which was dizzying in every way. Over the course of the … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: Hinterland Brewery Bourbon Barrel Doppelbock

Beers I Have Known: Ahnapee Brewery Fun Guy

There is a lot of beer on premises when my team gathers for The World’s Largest Trivia Contest. Despite heroic consumption levels, that means there’s also a lot of beer left over at the close of the weekend, and to the clean-up crew go the spoils. Every year, I manage to score some beauties. This time around, I went home with a growler of Ahnapee Brewery’s Fun Guy (a growler offered to me by a teammate who termed it half-full, which the picture above demonstrates may not have been the most accurate assessment). Even though my body is calling out for … Continue reading Beers I Have Known: Ahnapee Brewery Fun Guy

14

This past weekend, I joined a team of boisterous, brilliant, boozy, and bad ass individuals to participate in WWSP-FM’s annual staging of the World’s Largest Trivia Contest. We finished in 14th place, which is right in our range. It’s probably worth noting that placement is out of more than 350 teams. So today is recovery day. More ambitious word-slinging returns tomorrow. Continue reading 14

One for Friday Encore: Mollie Donihe, “Come on Eileen (Cover)”

It is now a longstanding tradition that the Friday that ushers in the annual staging of the World’s Largest Trivia Contest by my broadcasting alma mater, WWSP-FM, is a day on which I post a version of “Come On Eileen.” As everyone knows, it is the official theme song of the Trivia team I play on. Really, everyone knows it, even Wikipedia: But the thought of hunting down a new take of this familiar song seems pointless to me when I already have a favorite cover version. This is my friend Mollie: She’s fantastic in countless ways. I could provide specifics, but I’m … Continue reading One for Friday Encore: Mollie Donihe, “Come on Eileen (Cover)”
