One for Friday, The Cost of Living, “So Much Better”
When I started this companion feature to the other music related foolishness I indulge in to help close out the working week, I came up with a couple of guidelines. For one thing, I was only going to post material that was officially out of print, a guideline that’s already expanded to have some wiggle room. The other was that I’d stick exclusively with material that I owned, converting and uploading the audio for the express purpose of using it here. My iTunes library is filled with wonderful obscurities previously uploaded to different pockets on the Web by other souls … Continue reading One for Friday, The Cost of Living, “So Much Better”
But I still believe and I will rise up with fists
Iron Fist has a special message. Just for you. Oh, that cryptic martial arts master. (Posted simultaneously to “Jelly-Town!”) Continue reading But I still believe and I will rise up with fists
You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek
My oh my, it’s been quite some time since this box has been cracked open: It’s perhaps been long enough that a refresher is required. This box contains a multitude of items that I’ve been toting around for ages, my … Continue reading You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek
One day I know there’ll be a place called home
For anyone wondering about the follow-up on yesterday’s post… …Radley’s home. He got through it as well as can be expected and fully acquainted his new vet in his unique charm as a patient. Thanks to everyone who passed along well wishes. (Posted simultaneously to “Jelly-Town!”) Continue reading One day I know there’ll be a place called home
So here’s what happened today. This morning, shortly after midnight, Radley–you remember Radley–woke up and started whining to go outside. This is a little unusual for him since he typically makes it through the entire night without difficulty. Lately, though, he’s been having some trouble urinating, which we chalked up to an urinary tract infection, an ailment he’s had once before. He just completed a round of antibiotics on Friday and we’d been trying to discern, without much luck, if it had helped him or not. Our plan was to check how it went for him when we woke up … Continue reading

Touch me, I’m sick, yeah, touch me, I’m sick
While I’m sorely tempted to basically steal someone else’s very funny joke to describe how I feel today, instead I’ll just modify a picture recently posted by a friend of mine. That guy there looks the way I feel. Sometimes … Continue reading Touch me, I’m sick, yeah, touch me, I’m sick
One for Friday: Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, “Madonna of the Wasps”
One of the enduring pleasures of being a devoted fan of music is the hunt. Even in the long-tailed world of Amazon and the other well-stocked purveyors of recorded music out there in the wilds of the Web, there’s still a unique joy to be found in perusing a new record store, especially one with abundant used bins, discovering lost little gems or that album you’ve always wanted at a price that’s irresistible. The one and only time I was a patron of the Minnesota Monstrosity, I went in under the delusion that have more retail space would mean a … Continue reading One for Friday: Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians, “Madonna of the Wasps”
Outside it’s a bright night, there’s an opera at Lincoln Center, movie stars arrive by limousine
Blow Out (Brian De Palma, 1981). De Palma is a fascinating figure to me. He emerged with the film school generation of the seventies, standing shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Scorsese, Coppola and Spielberg, indeed earning the most rapturous reviews bestowed upon any of them by the grand doyenne film critic of the era. To this day, there are a fleet of people who will proudly stand up and talk about every scrap of his output as if it were the needs to be studied with the unwavering attention usually reserved for the peak offerings of Welles or … Continue reading Outside it’s a bright night, there’s an opera at Lincoln Center, movie stars arrive by limousine
