“Valery (please don’t be mad at me),” the new track from Caroline Rose, is a splendid piece of power pop. It exists in the delirious netherworld between the catchy slickness of Cheap Trick and the odd experimentation of Geese, dispensing offbeat cynicism with aplomb (“Alien decisions from a swamp-like past/ Now I’m just a subway rat running from the lab/ I reject this perfect structure/ I burn down this home”). It’s odd and approachable at the same time; that dichotomy is a huge component of its charm.
Gentling The Horse At The Walt Whitman Mall, Roses’s new album, releases today.
