Tonight at 6:00 p.m., the college radio station that I write about often in this space will commence the 41st staging of their annual trivia contest, a Mardi Gras of minutiae that has grown so monumental that it lays claim to being the “World’s Largest.” As cameras have capture, I’m a participant in this contest, playing on a team of some notoriety, a team that, unbelievably, has been playing in this contest for over twenty years.
For me, as it is with many of the 11,000 or so who will come to Stevens Point to hang on every word uttered by college radio DJs over the course of 54 hours, this weekend represents a reunion, a handy excuse to come together with friends I’ve known for years. In my case, many of my teammates were cohorts back when we were young enough to be running that college radio station, working through weekend weariness to help make sure this question-filled fundraiser ran smoothly. We are The Cakers. We are a band, a tribe, a clan, a way of life. And we have an overabundance of team lore. Case in point:
I am continually amazed by the creativity of my friends, my teammates. I could write more–much more–but I’ve got a big weekend to prepare for.
