Last night’s How I Met Your Mother was largely about the baggage that people carry into their romantic relationships. As the show is wont to do, it literalized the term, manifesting emotional issues as actual suitcases and other luggage that people toted around with them. For the most part, those bags were labeled with the sort of issues that result from damaged relationships: “Still In Love With Ex” or “Left at the Altar.” At the end, in a throwaway detail, there was a guy toting around the harshest, most soul-crushing baggage of all:
