One for Friday: The Trilobites, “I Can’t Wait For Summer to End”

Including my years as an undergraduate student, I’ve moved to the rhythms of a traditional academic year most of my adult life. This means I get to recapture a little of that childhood feeling about summer, that it’s a break, or at least a change. Often my summers were actually busier when I was in school at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. It was a much smaller group of students who stuck around in the summer months, dedicated to keeping the college radio station going. During some stretches, it wasn’t uncommon for me to be on the air every day, even a couple times a day as we had trouble filling shifts. And that was in addition to whatever other job I was working in order to make enough money to pay for food, rent, and other necessities.

It was incredibly fun, but also exhausting. By the time we flipped the calendar to August, I was ready for the school year to start again. The sensation may not have been as the one voices in this song from Australia’s The Trilobites, but it was definitely there. Even now that I benefit from a much more sedate and relaxing summer schedule, I start to get itchy around now, ready for the energy level on campus to kick up again. And sometimes when I think about it, I heart the sound of waves interrupted by a rapid drumbeat.

(Disclaimer: It is my understanding that the EP which houses this song is out of print and unavailable through any means, and it doesn’t strike me as a song that had wound up on all sorts of other compilations. So it’s posted here with the belief that it’s cannot be procures through a monetary transaction that provides compensation to the artist. If anyone with due authority to do so asks me to remove it, I will promptly and gladly comply.)
