Spectrum Check

I had a few contributions up at Spectrum Culture this week, including one more than I originally anticipated. The first thing that posted was a review of the new album from Lemonade, which I actually forgot landed in my iTunes because I was supposed to write about it. So while I’ve been listening to it a fair amount since I got it, I hadn’t been thinking about what to say about it until the official deadline crossed my inbox. I think I pulled it together fine, but it was a little more of a scramble than it needed to be.

I also got a chance to review the new film from Lynn Shelton, which finally spurred me to watch her terrific breakthrough feature from a couple years ago. I’ll be getting to that one in a future catch-up reviews post. As for the newer Shelton, it’s pretty damn good.

That was supposed to be it for full-length reviews, but we had a writer very understandably have to withdraw from turning in what was intended to be the sole new music review to go up on Friday. A call went out to the whole staff to see if anyone could get something in quickly, and I used that as impetus to finally write about the Sun Kil Moon album that I’ve had for a few weeks now. Fittingly, the only reason I had that one to review is because the writer who originally claimed it apparently dropped off the face of the world wide web, and his pending assignments were distributed to others, including me.

Finally, I tossed off a handful of words for this week’s List Inconsequential feature, which gave me the welcome but shudder-inducing opportunity to write about the nastiest food item served at the Christmas Eve celebrations of my youth.
