This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another.

Much as I’m an advocate for exploring the bevy of options available out there in the great big beer world (that can be read as “I’m a hopeless sucker for a shiny new release”), I also tend to have a handful of standbys that I return to repeatedly. Lately, I often find myself defaulting to Rocket Girl, a pale lager that is one of the standards of Asheville Brewing Company. It’s not one of the most adventurous beers in town — it’s fair to say it’s not even particularly one of the bolder beers in Asheville Brewing’s lineup — and yet I gravitate to it. It may actually be its relative simplicity that makes me like it so much. Without compromising flavor and depth, the beer is notably direct. It’s not one designed to sip, gently slosh across the palate, and pick out deeply hidden notes. Clearly, it’s meant to be drank, not toyed around with. And it’s especially conducive to taking on some added flavor, meaning it’s always a worthwhile treat when the run it through their Randall filter at one of the local beer fests. And of course I’m just enough of a susceptible geeky boy (see the “My Misspent Youth” tag available to the direct right) that the very name Rocket Girl is going to have its own mighty sway.
