I mean it as a high compliment when I assert that the new song Billie Eilish created for the Barbie movie soundtrack recalls the expert work of Randy Newman. Especially when Newman was the go-to for Pixar during the animation studio’s creative peak, he had a nearly unparalleled ability to craft songs that elegantly got at the emotional truth of what was happening on screen while including details from the plot given just the right amount of makeover to stand as metaphor. Even without yet seeing Greta Gerwig’s cinematic rendering of Mattel’s number one gal, I know that Eilish absolutely nails Newman’s signature move on “What Was I Made For?” Working as usual with her brother, Finneas, she makes a song that is delicate, precisely sung, and exquisitely heartfelt.
The soundtrack to Barbie, like the movie it supports, is scheduled for release on July 21st.
