Misery can have a touch of majesty to it. That’s one of the lessons that Mitski teaches, and it’s reinforced on her quietly staggering new single “Bug Like an Angel.” The music is mostly spare as she intones lyrics as devastating as an accusatory stare: “As I got older/ I learned I’m a drinker/ Sometimes a drink feels like family.” When she occasionally welcomes the accompaniment of a chorus, the relative restraint strengthens the power of the moment, especially on the line “They break you right.” And none of that even mentions the roundhouse punch of the closing lyrics about the devil. The cut is enveloping, enthralled, and potent enough to raise goosebumps. That’s Mitski’s art.
Mitski’s new album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We, is scheduled for release in September.
