Greta Gerwig on the Blockbuster ‘Barbie’ Opening (and How She Got Away With It) by Kyle Buchanan
This is a fairly straightforward interview with Greta Gerwig, conducted after her latest feature, Barbie, officially blew past all expectations for its critical and commercial success. She is utterly charming throughout and is especially thoughtful in explaining her strategy of addressing criticism preemptively in the film, which is really the movie’s right bower (the narration insertion that begins “Note to film makers” is one of the more cunning examples of the strategy’s usage). She’s correct in her observation “If you don’t give voice to that, then you’re nowheresville.” This piece is published by The New York Times.
Ann Roth Is Hollywood’s Secret Weapon by Maureen Dowd
Clearly prompted by Ann Roth’s splendid cameo in Barbie, Maureen Dowd profiles the legendary costume designer for The New York Times. As anyone would hope would be the case of a Hollywood legend in her nineties who’s got a couple Oscars on her shelf, Roth is wonderfully feisty. She shares stories and opinions with the blithe candor of someone who’s well past the point of treading carefully in a community of sensitive souls. The story is colorful and a joy, just like the movie that earned Roth her first screen acting credit.
