Laughing Matters — Charlie Brooker’s How to Report the News

Sometimes comedy illuminates hard truths with a pointed urgency that other means can’t quite achieve. Sometimes comedy is just funny. This series of posts is mostly about the former instances, but the latter is valuable, too.

Although he’s probably best known in the U.S. for creating Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker created a lot of different media at home in the U.K. Including in his CV are a group of series that explored different corners of popular culture with the same satiric, deconstructionist bent that characterizes many of the best Black Mirror episodes. One of those series, Charlie Brooker’s Newswipe, included this downright brilliant bit that mocks the tired structure of most television journalism field reports. The simplicity of Brooker’s mockery and the pitch-perfect tone only increase how savagely the satire hits.
