The British government was concerned about an uptick in the number of children dying in drowning accidents. They took one of the clearest courses of action at their disposal and mounted a media outreach campaign, including films to be shown in school and public service announcements to air on the telly. For the latter, the Central Office of Information commissioned Illustra Films to create the finished product. Christine Hermon wrote and produced the short film, and Jeff Grant directed it. Donald Pleasence narrates the short film that warns of the dangers of “dark and lonely water.” It’s less instructional and information than it is downright terrifying.
