Tradition holds that the holiday season formally begins with Phoebe Bridgers releasing a cover song as a charity single, but, this year, she’s one of the boys. So Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus are present, too. Joining boygenius are the Irish duo Ye Vagabonds, who opened for the band on some dates in Ireland earlier this year. It’s fitting that their talents are enlisted, because this year’s offerings is a somber, achingly lovely take on “The Parting Glass,” a traditional with Scottish origins that is deeply embedded in Irish culture. They perform the song in tribute to and remembrance of Sinéad O’Connor.
Given the motivation behind the song selection, boygenius asked the Sinéad O’Connor Estate to select the charity that will receive all proceeds generated from the track. They chose the Aisling Project, an afterschool intervention program from disadvantaged young people in Dublin. The organization’s website states their vision as follows:
We provide the education and life skills necessary to provide a sound foundation for young people to complete of the education cycle. Our programmes are in place to help every child become aware of their value and of the options available to them in life. We help children to develop as unique individuals and to achieve their potential as human beings.
“The Parting Glass” can be purchased through the boygenius website. Among other abundant pleasures of the track, there’s one detail that I find especially moving and apt. On what will almost assuredly by the last recording boygenius releases in their busy, monumental year, the tracks ends with them intoning the lyric “Good night and joy be with you all” in pristine harmony.
