The band Yumi Zouma was formed in New Zealand, but its members are now spread all over the globe. They’ve acknowledged the difficulty in creating together over the course of the past few years, the challenge of geography compounded by various COVID-era concerns and protections. For the first time in a long while, they were finally able to come together for a couple weeks earlier this year to concentrate on recording together, resulting in the new release EP IV. Maybe that return to togetherness is why there’s a lovely, hopeful lilt to their new track “Desert Mile,” even as the lyrics sit in a melancholy place, assessing the end of a relationship: “I’ve had enough of bending over back again/ I wasn’t tough, I never had a heart to break.” The song nestles in comfortably among the lush, lithe indie pop of the moment as practiced by the likes of Soccer Mommy. It glimmers.
EP IV was released this week.
