“Heavy,” the new single from Dublin-based band Sprints, is about being wracked with anxiety, which seems like one of sanest topics for a powerful rock band to howl about in this age and day. The deadpan singsong of Karla Chubb’s vocals hit the same vein of disaffection as a defense mechanism that defined Wet Leg’s exemplary debut release. Rather than inverted pop, Sprints plies their trade with a pummeling, punk-fueled rock music that’s like vintage PJ Harvey backed by Fugazi. That makes for a pretty spectacular beginning to the new year.
Letter to Self, the debut album from Sprints, releases today.
