This Week’s Model — The Jesus and Mary Chain, “Girl 71”

There was a time when I was all but certain that sibling Jim and William Reid would never make music together again as the Jesus and Mary Chain. Even when the reunion occurred, I didn’t expect the output of the band would necessarily be all that vital, and I suppose it’s up for debate as to whether their 2017 comeback album, Damage and Joy, stands up against they often spectacular work they delivered in their nineteen-eighties and nineteen-nineties heyday. Much as I didn’t anticipate being enraptured by a new Jesus and Mary Chain song, here we are. “Girl 71” is reminiscent of the gleaming, hard-candy material on Automatic with a hint of Stoned & Dethroned tenderness, the latter quality enhanced by the duet vocals of Rachel Conte. I suppose my appreciation of the track might be shaped somewhat by nostalgia, but I don’t believe that’s the case. This dark, gleaming gem would be a grabber whenever it arrived.

Glasgow Eyes, the new album from the Jesus and Mary Chain, is scheduled for release in March.
