It’s been inspiring to watch college students stand up for their beliefs these past couple weeks, and it’s been dismaying to watch the disproportionately hostile response of college administrators. I’m also not thrilled with how much of the mainstream media coverage implies that the student encampments are chaotic when the on-the-ground visual evidence suggests the opposite is true. It’s best to bypass the news outlets that have demonstrated they will instinctually — or deliberately — skew their coverage because they have a vested interest in preserving the notion of unassailably honest and accurate authority figures. Instead, look to student-run media for the real truth about these situations. The above articles are published by the Columbia Spectator, The Daily Texan, and The Lantern, respectively.

It it as active problem with our current news coverage and the general discourse that actions that concretely affect the lives of U.S. workers, such as those detailed by Timothy Noah in this article, are generally ignored in favor of anything that might be considered contentious. This piece is published by The New Republic.
