This Week’s Model — Good Looks, “Can You See Me Tonight?”

Maybe its the sunlight outside my kitchen door doing the typing right now, but I can’t help but feel like “Can You See Me Tonight?” is a perfect summer song. The new single from the Austin-based band Good Looks has an earthy-Americana vibe and is simultaneously easygoing and propulsive, akin to Wilco when they get into a back-to-basics mode. The lyrics, penned by lead singer Tyler Jordan, directly address the faulty process of seeking validation through performing music (“By the end of tonight/ I’ll sing myself hoarse and still feel empty”) and how the same ill cycles can seep into personal relationships without proper self-examination. In the song’s reckoning, understanding and owning the missing pieces that drive that need are important steps in “turning evil to good.” The cut concludes with a spectacular tangle of rock sound that is like the War on Drugs without the more ethereal instincts stripped away. “Can You See Me Tonight?” is made for having the windows down and the volume all the way up.

Lived Here for a While, the new album from Good Looks, is scheduled for release in June.
