Outside Reading — Hey, Man, Did We Order an Orchestra? edition

Cypress Hill make 28-year-old Simpsons joke come true by Colin Paterson

In this dangerously threatened republic in which we live, it’s nice sometimes to take pleasure in a happier news story. And the news story about rap stalwarts Cypress Hill paying off an old joke from The Simpsons by playing a concert with the London Symphony Orchestra is a goddamn delight. Writing for BBC News, Colin Paterson reports on the preparations for the event, including a golden detail about a supposed mixup when some classical musicians used shorthand lingo for a glockenspiel.

Ethical considerations in Madison’s live booking landscape by Steven Spoerl

Steven Spoerl’s article is centered around venues in Madison, Wisconsin that persist in booking performers who have been credibly accused of — or even confessed to — repugnant crimes. The thoughtful reporting and analysis by Spoerl are applicable, though. Any business that brings in outside entertainers needs to reckon with the histories of who they’re hiring, but, on the basis of their show listings, shockingly few are interested in doing so, evidently deciding that ticket sales are the only factor worth considering. This piece is published by Tone Madison.
