I am precisely the right demographic to be helplessly thrilled that Kim Deal has a new solo song out. The Pixies’ Doolittle landed in heavy rotation during my first year as a college radio DJ, and tracks from the Breeders’ magnificent Last Splash were like gifts in a sea of soundalike grunge whenever they graced the playlist of the “new rock alternative” station where I worked after graduation. Deal unfailingly came across as an artist of uncommon integrity and quite simply the coolest of the cool.
“Coast,” Deal’s new single, ratifies all the earlier adoration. It’s loose and easygoing, reminiscent of the scruffy, lo-fi material Maureen Tucker put out during her sporadic solo career. The track includes charmingly sleepy horn parts by the Chicago-based marching band Mucca Pazza, and it was overseen by Deal’s longtime friend and collaborator Steve Albini with his trademark sonic understatement and purity.
Truly, I couldn’t be more smitten.
