Red Hot is a non-profit that was started in 1989 with the express purpose of raising money to help the gay community that was being devastated by the AIDS epidemic. By some accounting, the organization’s first major fundraising effort, a fantastic compilation titled Red Hot + Blue, raised more than a million dollars for the medical advocacy group ACT UP. Red Hot has continued on ever since, expanding their mission to address all sorts of instances of medical injustice faced by those in the LGTBQ+ community. As a bonus, most of their efforts involve the solicitation of yet more amazing music.
The latest project undertaken by Red Hot is said to be their most ambitious yet. TRAИƧA is a compilation that has been in the works for three years. It brings together more than one hundred artists for a release that includes forty-six newly recorded cuts. The list of contributing musicians reads like a recitation of the coolest kid’s record collection: Faye Webster, Julien Baker, Kara Jackson, Perfume Genius, Alan Sparhawk, Yaya Bey, Adrianne Lenker, Cassandra Jenkins, and, with her first new music in years, Sade. The album is specifically meant to support the trans community.
The first official single from TRAИƧA is extraordinary, a promise of yet more greatness to come. London-based singer-songwriter Lauren Auder covers Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U,” backed by none other than Wendy & Lisa. Because that duo has far more expertise on the song in question than me, I’ll defer to their statement on the work:
“It’s hard to impress us with a cover of a Prince song, especially a personal favorite of ours like, ‘I wud die 4 u,’ but Lauren’s voice and vibey sensibilities spoke to us. We were happy to lend whatever we could to the project and to Lauren to make the song something special. We’d venture to say that Prince might’ve enjoyed some of the innovation of this version of the song.”
TRAИƧA is scheduled for release in November.
