This Week’s Model — Mediocre, “I Might Be Giant”

Piper Torrison and Keely Martin raise a lowkey ruckus on the new single “I Might Be Giant.” Basically, it’s proper indie rock. It’s a track to cue up when words inevitable fail in trying to describing the scuffling music genre. “It sounds just like this,” press play, and the job is done. Even their band name, Mediocre, helps to convey the strangely contended shrug that is indie rock’s very soul. So do the lyrics: “I wanna walk around/ I wanna see you again/ I wanna make a sound/ Or something bigger than…/ Me.”

Complete with its mild throwback sound to the catchy, buzzy icons of the left end of the dial from a generation or two ago. There’s a little Connells and a little Nada Surf in there. Maybe even a touch of vintage Superchunk. It’s so very splendid.

Growth Eater, the debut full-length from Mediocre, releases today.
