Ripley Johnson stays busy. In addition to his still-ongoing tenure with Wooden Shjips, the guitarist is one half of Moon Duo. In recent years, he’s also released four albums at a steady clip under the name Rose City Band.
Johnson has referred to the Rose City Band output as “porch music,” and there’s an unmistakable easygoing quality to the band’s new single, “Lights on the Way.” If Yo La Tengo decided they were going to draw eternal inspiration from the Grateful Dead’s “Touch of Grey,” it might wind up sounding like this. As it turns out, that unlikely turn of events would result in an absolutely dandy song.
Sol Y Sombra, the new album from Rose City Band, is scheduled for release in January.
