“Digging a Pond,” the new track from the Philadelphia band Gladie, opens with the lyrics “Felt the pain as I gripped the camera/ I should have left it in the car/ I spend my whole life observing/ I spend my whole life so far.” In an interview accompanying the release of the song, Augusta Koch, frontwoman and chief songwriter for Gladie, explains that she wrote it while working as a wedding photographer and feeling detached from the joyous scenes on the other side of her lens. There’s definitely a sense of melancholy that comes through in the lyrics, even as the lush indie rock guitar eddies that build in the song have a soul-bolstering potency. It’s tremendous.
“Digging a Pond” was recorded for the Open Sessions series curated by Weathervane Music, a Philadelphia nonprofit that supports the local, independent music community.
