“Scornful Heart,” the new track from Sunny War, opens with a slow, mournful twang. The tempo and tone pick up just a bit as the song progresses, but only so much. It takes on the veneer of a blues-influenced folk song, nicely suiting War’s deep, rich vocals. Across the track, her voice is joined by that of Tré Burt, a fellow traveler in the land of music-making that defies simple genre assignments. The lyrics are direct and piquant, making the comparisons to Tracy Chapman that War has evoked over the years seem more apt than ever: “I may be torn/ But not torn apart/ Baby I was born/ With a scornful heart.” Catchy and resonant, the song doesn’t let go.
Armageddon In A Summer Dress, the new album from Sunny War, is scheduled for release in February.
