Deep Sea Diver has been cracking away in the music biz for a little over fifteen years, and it feels like maybe their moment is about to arrive. Their forthcoming fourth album is their first to be released after signing with Sub Pop, and there’s a sweeping fullness to the tracks they’ve released that feels like a leveling up from what’s come before. Deep Sea Diver sound ready.
“Shovel,” the latest single, calls to mind the expansive, edgy pop of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the luxuriant abandon of Chelsea Wolfe or Perfume Genius. Jessica Dobson, the band’s frontperson and main creative force, sings the lyrics with a certainty of purpose that takes her from bellows to whispers. She conveys the emotional story of the song with the gradients in his delivery. The effect is delightfully dizzying.
Billboard Heart, the new album from Deep Sea Diver, is scheduled for release in February.
