This Week’s Model — Sleigh Bells, “Wanna Start a Band?”

I suppose someone out there is hoping that Sleigh Bells will release a project that brings a wild reinvention of their sound. I doubt it will ever come, and why should it. It’s now been been fifteen years since the duo burst into the cool kids’ cultural sphere with their debut album, Treats, and they’ve been riffing on its noisy electropop, hard-candy goodness ever since.

Their new single, “Wanna Start a Band?” is perfectly locked in to the Sleigh Bells sound. That makes a load of sense considering guitarist Derek Miller has been tinkering with its foundational elements for about a decade. It’s all slashing guitar, chromium beats, and other weird studio elements zinging in and out, all rattled further by lead singer Alexis Krauss bringing her trademark sleek, scalded vocals to deliver lyrics that convey the band’s rough origin story. It’s basically everything they are, all packed into a track that gets its business done in less than three minutes.

The new single isn’t attached to as forthcoming album, at least as of yet. Instead, its release was used to announce an early summer tour.
