It was thirty-five years ago that English band the Sundays released their gleaming, gorgeous debut album, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. That nostalgic factoid sprung to mind when I listened to “Caterpillar,” the new single from Florence Road. The quartet from Bray, County Wicklow, in Ireland, bring the same sort of lithe charm and seemingly effortlessness that distinguished that long ago Sundays record. The gentle jangle of the music and warm vocals of Lily Aron complete the sense of familiarity. The pristine quality of the pop only makes the lyrics about dealing with dark feelings (“Is there something inside of me/ Making me believe/ That black is white/ Is this something I can’t defeat/ Maybe I should try and sleep tonight”) all the more poignant.
Like that 1990 music I can’t seem to stop referencing, “Caterpillar” is a song to adore.
