The Los Angeles trio Automatic this week unveiled the new single “Is It Now?” The track has a kinship with the recent output from Horsegirl, another trio without a Y chromosome between. In addition to the cool indie shuffle that primarily characterizes the music, the track borrows the burbling bass and seething synths of prime Joy Division. The lyrics hit the sweet spot of twenty-something irritable dissatisfaction: “I wanna be like/ What do you stand for/ They wanna be like/ Bet on a dead horse.” It’s a dandy song built for the scruffy kids who spend their time on the left end of the dial.

The new album from Automatic, which is reportedly also titled Is It Now?, is tentatively scheduled for release later this year.
