
On her Instagram page, Sudan Archives names her art as “ORCHESTRAL BLACK DANCE MUSIC,” and it’s undoubtedly her innovative incorporation of a classical violin background into her vivid modern soul music that first — and forcefully — grabs attention. It’s a notable choice, then, that Sudan Archives describes her new single, “MY TYPE,” as her first “rap rap song.” It is a more direct embrace of familiar pop forms without relenting on her commitment to sounding different, slyer, freer. The track is incessantly catchy as it pulses like a strobe light and her vocals skid atop the sounds like a skipping stone. It’s giddy, grand, and deeply, deeply cool.
