This Week’s Model — Rocket, “Act Like Your Title”

On their new single, “Act Like Your Title,” the Los Angeles–based band Rocket reaches back to a fleeting moment a few decades back when it seemed like noisy rock and ethereal pop. It was a time a single act could hold both Hüsker Dü and Cocteau Twins as equal influences in their creative heart. The spur that persisted from that source was shoegaze, but this track reminds me more of the early work of Lush, which operated at more of a coo than a drone. Alithea Tuttle’s rich, warm, yet slightly spiky vocals and the lyrics that are simultaneously emotionally potent and a little oblique (“With wide eyes, act like your title (act like your title)/
Release the denial, I’m better off then”) go a long way towards locking in that impression. Float away with it.

R is for Rocket, the debut album from Rocket, is scheduled for release in October.
