This Week’s Model — Courtney Barnett, “Stay in Your Lane”

Not counting the instrumental movie score release End of the Day, the last proper studio album from Courtney Barnett was called Things Take Time, Take Time. That title was evidently a forecast as much as anything else. Although we’ve not really that far past the three-year gaps between previous Barnett full-lengths, it’s felt like a long time since the Australian singer-songwriter has popped up with a new tune of her own. The drought ended this week with the release of the single “Stay in Your Lane.”

Ten years after her smashing debut, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, there’s enough Barnett material out in the world to declare that “Stay in Your Line” is a prime example of what she does best. The song is buoyantly catchy, wry in its forlorn emotions, and marked by ravishing guitar work. It’s good to have Courtney back.

There’s no album announcement at this time, but surely one is coming soon.
