This Week’s Model — TTSSFU, “Upstairs”

TTSFU is the performing guise adopted by Tasmin Stephens, an artfully outré musician based out of the U.K. Stephens presents her persona as an act of solidarity with the slinkily clothed, alt-rock it girls who came before her. Think Courtney Love or Sky Ferreira. That kind of image orchestration can be a source of irritation if a performer doesn’t have the goods. Stephens has got the goods.

“Upstairs,” the new single from TTSSFU, has a post-punk rhythm and an airy flow. Stephens sings lyrics of lovely loneliness (“I went upstairs to be alone with you/ And by that I mean a photo”) with a warm fragility that suggests that perseverance is within emotional reach. Truthfully, I can’t describe the track better than Danielle Chelosky does at Stereogum: “A lot of TTSSFU’s songs feel like having fun at a party, but this one feels like crying in the bathroom of a party.”
