If the universe is arcing toward the purely perfect indie pop song, then the Toronto-based band Cootie Catcher moves a long way along the curve with their new track, “Straight Drop.” It’s jangly and boasts a jaunty beat. There’s a peppering of odd little synth sounds, and lead singer Anita Fowl intones sweetly sullen lyrics about a wavering relationship (“Can’t keep anticipating/ To catch a break if/ You don’t really care what I do”) with a tone of warm resignation. The cut clocks in at just over two and a half minutes, and it comes from an album that arrives less than a year after its predecessor, suggesting an appropriate lack of fuss. This, friends, is the lowkey musical wonderment that we deserve.
The new album from Cootie Catcher, Something We All Got, is scheduled for release in February.
