The above New York Times article, written by Nathan Deuel, has been making the round in professional circles and various other fields, but I stubbornly waited to read it until it showed up in the physical newspaper that’s plopped on the side of my driveway every day. The piece does a reasonable job of highlighting what keeps student-run radio stations viable contributors to the culture these days, but there’s also a flabbergasted-by-mundane-details quality to the reporting. As I read it, I was reminded of a much stronger piece that Emily White published in her own Substack a few weeks ago. She astutely examines the uptick in participation that many college radio stations have experienced in recent years and posits plausible explanations for the shift.

Jane Fonda is closing in on her eighty-eighth birthday, and she’s been fighting the correct battles for most of her life. Published by The Ankler, this article was written before Netflix emerged as the leading contender to purchase Warner Bros. Fonda’s arguments are pertinent no matter which corporation fortifies their portfolio with one of Hollywood’s oldest movies studios.
