Snail Mail’s latest single, “My Maker,” opens with a crisp, jangly acoustic guitar line, like a gleaming artifact from the mid-nineties era when the likes of Sixpence None the Richer and Natalie Imbruglia could briefly rule the radio airwaves with a bit of tuneful longing. Lindsey Jorden uses the lilt to smuggle in gloomier sentiments. At the opening of the song she sings, “I wanna fly a plane to Heaven/ Tarry at the airport bar/ Probably couldn’t even get in/ I know I’ve gone wrong/ Let’s restart.” She proceeds to ruminate on mortality as the song grows fuller and firmer. It’s a rich, layered work from one of the strongest creators in indie rock.
Ricochet, the new album from Snail Mail, is scheduled for release in March.
