“Dry Spell” sounds like vintage Kacey Musgraves. I don’t mean that assertion as a slight on the recent albums from the Texas-born singer-songwriter. It’s simply the most efficient description of the mix of romantic melancholy, randy longing, and sly humor that defines the song. Against an easygoing chug of a country-pop tune, Musgraves laments an extended stretch without constructive canoodling. Examples of her characteristically clever tinkering with idioms are strewn across the lyrics: “Ain’t no new notches on my belt/ And I’m tired of keepin’ my hands to myself/ 911, it’s officially a cry for help/ Y’all, I’m going through a dry spell, yep.” It’s ludicrously catchy, the kind of track that locks into the brain after a single listen.
Middle of Nowhere, the new album from Musgraves, is scheduled for release in May.
