I won’t live long and I’m full of rot
So I’m clearly a little lax in the whole thinking, writing and typing thing this week. That’s in part because my laptop and I are having this sort of argument: Sad to say, I think it’s time for this little device to go see the doctor. Tomorrow will probably be some sort of low content mode concession as well, but I’ll try to fulfill my regular One for Friday duties. (Due credit: I swiped the image from elsewhere.) I’m just looking for a faith waiting to be followed

Eagle flew out of the night, he was something to observe
Just one more piece of an especially good weekend for the guy who holds the keys to Air Force One these days: I’m so pleased that “Solsbury Hill” has become the go-to song for fake trailers. Continue reading Eagle flew out of the night, he was something to observe
College Countdown: 90FM’s Top 90 of 1989, 26 and 25
26. Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, Mystery Road Any band leaning heavily on country music in building out their sound is going to rely fairly heavily on a few different well-worn themes. The band Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ decided to openly acknowledge that … Continue reading College Countdown: 90FM’s Top 90 of 1989, 26 and 25
Spectrum Check
This week, I tried to satisfy my household’s penchant for films that traffic in monsters and gore by reviewing Stake Land. As is often the case when dealing with this sort of genre fare, it was ultimately disappointing, the promising, inventive elements ultimately unable to outweigh the portions of the film that were pure retread. I’m still longing for that amazing discovery moment that comes from watching something Ti West’s The House of the Devil. I also reviewed the new album from Vivian Girls, which was a little odd having already worked with the band as performers who played at … Continue reading Spectrum Check
One for Friday: The Actual Tigers, “Standing By”
I’d been away from radio for several years in the summer of 2001 when I finally found myself back in the midst of a faction of the broadcast spectrum that I hadn’t experienced in nearly a decade. I was part of radio, this time as an advisor rather than a student. Still, I was right there in the heart of the station, my original office located directly across from the main booth. After a lengthy stretch of having to engage in hefty outside scholarship to stay connected to the music that I most enjoyed, it was now all around me … Continue reading One for Friday: The Actual Tigers, “Standing By”
My Misspent Youth: Godzilla by Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe
I read a lot of comic books as a kid. This series of posts is about the comics I read, and, occasionally, the comics that I should have read. Almost from the moment I started reading superhero comics, I was … Continue reading My Misspent Youth: Godzilla by Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe
Every other day is like a kick in the shin, every other day is like the day just wins
I have a decidedly busy week at work, which is severely compromising my ability to write new original content for my little corner of the digital world. In an effort to make sure that there’s something here today (but not … Continue reading Every other day is like a kick in the shin, every other day is like the day just wins
She rides a submarine, she rides a time machine, she rides upon a dream
And here I thought the gun ads that turned up routinely in old comic books were troubling. I wish it had “COMES WITH REAL PLUTONIUM!” somewhere on there. Continue reading She rides a submarine, she rides a time machine, she rides upon a dream
Top Fifty Films of the 80s — Number Thirty-Six
#36 — Prizzi’s Honor (John Huston, 1985) I always think of Prizzi’s Honor of the kind of film that results when old pro cinematic creators settle in and have some fun. I do mean to imply that the film is … Continue reading Top Fifty Films of the 80s — Number Thirty-Six
