We travel everywhere, we’re gonna take the suburbs to the stars
If it’s still true that familiarity breeds contempt, then there must be a lot of contemptuous people buying movie tickets these days. While I still subscribe to Manohla Dargis’s assertion, made in defense of a movie I find mediocre at … Continue reading We travel everywhere, we’re gonna take the suburbs to the stars
Welcome to your life, there’s no turning back
Super-Villain Team-Up was a title that Marvel Comics produced in the mid-seventies. Each issue found two dastardly characters joining forces to do battle with the forces of good in the Marvel Universe (well, they were just as likely to fight … Continue reading Welcome to your life, there’s no turning back
I look in the mirror and all I see is a young old man with only a dream
I didn’t finish the movie review I’m working on, so I’ll need to distract you from my negligence with this. This, according to a talented individual, is what it would look like if David Lynch directed Dirty Dancing… (Posted simultaneously to “Jelly-Town!”) Continue reading I look in the mirror and all I see is a young old man with only a dream
Well, the sun gets weary and the sun goes down, ever since the watermelon
The video rental shop down the highway from us is closing down (a familiar sign of the times) and we stopped by, lured in by the bright yellow banners announcing “EVERYTHING MUST GO!” Sure enough, the entire stock of the … Continue reading Well, the sun gets weary and the sun goes down, ever since the watermelon
Someone lock me away because it’s a crime to fall in love
When I took my recent break, I decided there were a couple recurring features I’d let retire. As much as I’ve enjoyed the commentary it inspired, I figured it’s about time to be done with random Batman covers (always pilfered … Continue reading Someone lock me away because it’s a crime to fall in love
One for Friday: Hunters & Collectors, “Back on the Breadline”
I had something different in mind for this week’s “One for Friday,” but this song was lodged in my head this morning, begging to be shared. I’ve previously shared about the old 90FM C Stacks. There was always a keen sense of discovery that accompanied a venture into that area, combined with an even more alluring shared secret quality. These were, after all, the most obscure records in the station. Playing a song off of one of those–especially a really good song–was like giving radio listeners a audio glimpse inside the diary of modern music. Still, not everything housed on … Continue reading One for Friday: Hunters & Collectors, “Back on the Breadline”

And your diagram was nervous when I saw you on TV
A convergence of new electronic devices came into my life today, which has kept me happily distracted. So instead of a lot of fancy-pants words, I’ll simply present my favorite Venn diagram of the week. Good ol’ Marshall Eriksen. (Posted … Continue reading And your diagram was nervous when I saw you on TV
Here comes the movies with dialogue so cool — why did they never tell me to speak like that in primary school?
Breaking and Entering (Anthony Minghella, 2006). Unexpectedly standing as the last feature film from Minghella, Breaking is evidence that we’ve lost someone from the dwindling population of directors interested in crafting films for grown-ups. With its tricky plot, its examination of delicate matters such as the growing chasm between economic classes and its unapologetic willingness to let the messiness of life seep into its framework, it’s hard to imagine that anyone ever expected this to become a substantial earner at the box office. Yet there it is, playing out with delicate insight and unfussy emotion. There’s a quiet ache to … Continue reading Here comes the movies with dialogue so cool — why did they never tell me to speak like that in primary school?
Isn’t this a time! A time to free the soul of man! Isn’t this a wonderful time!
Happy birthday, Uncle Pete! (Note: He’s not really my uncle, but I’m plenty proud to share the last name with him.) (Posted simultaneously to “Jelly-Town!”) Continue reading Isn’t this a time! A time to free the soul of man! Isn’t this a wonderful time!
