It’s hours of forever, coming all together at the crossroads of a minute
With astounding contrived hubbub, the days that Barack Obama has officially served as President of the United States crossed into triple digits earlier this week. Of course, the hyperactive fluttering of he media was expertly savaged by The Daily Show. … Continue reading It’s hours of forever, coming all together at the crossroads of a minute
Life’s an illusion, love is a dream, but I don’t know what it is
I’ve been slowly tracking through the scientific accomplishments of Dr. Reed Richards, but as this electronic space is revived, some philosophical balance is called for. Since science holds no political bias, we can celebrate the ingenuity of the rightful ruler … Continue reading Life’s an illusion, love is a dream, but I don’t know what it is
One for Friday: Soul Asylum, “Heavy Rotation”
During winter break after my first semester of college I asked the Program Director at the college radio station to tell me his pick for the best album of the year. He paused and thought about it, clearly not as trained as I was (by the nefarious influence of Rolling Stone) to always have a clear, decisive response at the ready whenever the opportunity arose to rank the offerings of pop culture. Eventually he answered “Soul Asylum’s Hang Time.” This caught me by surprise. I’d fiercely studied the handful of “best of” lists that were available during that era–what a … Continue reading One for Friday: Soul Asylum, “Heavy Rotation”
One for Friday: Alison Moyet, “And I Know”
When I made it to the college radio station in the fall of 1988, I was focused on those performers who knew how to make their guitars do wonderfully noisy things. I came late to the stirring population of artists who populated the subgenre of “college rock” after flailing around all over the radio dial during my teenage years. When I arrived, I was especially susceptible to the guiding judgment of my peers, and when the less tolerant denizens of my high school (a phrase you may accurately read as “every other student in my graduating class”) deemed a band … Continue reading One for Friday: Alison Moyet, “And I Know”
Break
I’ve been a very errant reporter in this space the past few days. The last I left you, my teammates and I were about to participate in the 40th edition of the World’s Largest Trivia Contest. We did very well, with an extremely respectable thirteenth place finish. I intended to post a couple of updates during the weekend but got lost in the swirl of the contest. Breaking my daily post habit wound up providing an excuse to take a little longer break from the space. As much fun as the weekend was, I emerged from it mentally exhausted. The … Continue reading Break
One for Friday: Dexy’s Midnight Runners, “Come On Eileen” (live)
Every April, Stevens Point is the location of the World’s Largest Trivia Contest. It originates and emanates from WWSP-90FM, the student-run radio station at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. 90FM is where I went to college. Well, okay, officially I went to college at UW-SP, but no matter how many classes I took or what the diploma says, I majored in college radio. I spent five years helping to run that contest and have been playing in it ever since. The team I’m on was in fact started by radio station alumni and probably about half of the forty people … Continue reading One for Friday: Dexy’s Midnight Runners, “Come On Eileen” (live)
This is the town and these are the people, this is the town where the people all stay

Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor? Well I don’t think I can take anymore.
In preparation for my weekend silliness, I’ve spent all day pouring through vintage print ads online. Along the way, I discovered this: I gotta say, I’m with bashful Benjamin J. Grimm on this one. Continue reading Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor? Well I don’t think I can take anymore.
