This weekend, I’ll participate in The World’s Largest Trivia ContestTM. I’m a little preoccupied with preparations for that, including some significant travel. To provide some sense of the madness of minutiae that dominates my mind this week, I’ll return to a bit of a tradition around these parts and share a few personally memorable answers from the twenty-five years or so that I’ve been involved with this contest, in one way or another.
As I noted yesterday, before I played in 90FM’s Trivia, I helped run the show. That included deejaying, a fairly nerve-wracking experience given the set required far tighter control than the norm and there was a sizable audience listening very attentively to every word. It was even more so when the writers of the contest used the occasion of my last on-air Trivia shift to pull a prank on me, mocking my apparent proclivity for using ten-dollar words on the movie review program. The question sheet for one of my last hours included the following gem: “What is the name of the classic album that includes the song ‘Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic’?” By the time I walked back to the station offices where the two writers rode out the contest, fielding calls on the complain line, they were already giggling over their stunt. I don’t recall how well I did spitting out those complicated syllables, but I must not have garbled it too badly. At least one team in the trophy ceremony a couple hours later attributed their surge into the top ten to having a devoted soul music fan who knew off the top of her head that the answer was Hot Buttered Soul.
More information can be found at the official Trivia site or try to get your hands (and eyes) on a certain documentary. You can also listen in to the radio station that hosts the contest. In order to see how things are going with the team I play on, Twitter is your best bet.
