On “Angelina,” the new single from the L.A. band Kitten, they build a breezy pop sound and deploy a burrowing, irresistible hook to create a perfect song of summer. And why shouldn’t they? The summer never ends where they live, and there’s a steady supply of movie stars to provide handy similes for feeling free and powerful. Need to capture what it’s like to glide down the highway in a convertible on a perfect, sunny day? Invoking a fresh-faced Angelina Jolie should do the trick.
The track sounds like Carly Rae Jepsen with more of an indie-pop sensibility. That’s something I’m not going to be able to resist. Then again, why would I want to resist it? Succumbing feels so good.
The sophomore album from Kitten is scheduled for release early in 2021.
