Based in Melbourne, Australia, the band CIVIC has been kicking around for a couple years, building a strong local following among those who are happiest when they’re leaving a cramped club with sweat-drenched clothes and ringing ears. EPs have been available for more far-flung devotees, and now the band’s debut full-length, Future Forecast, is scheduled for release at the end of March. The album is on Flightless Records, the label started to self-release King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard material, a detail that provides a strong indication of what CIVIC sounds like.
On the newly released single “Tell the Papers,” CIVIC blasts away with refined, muscular punk playing, reminiscent of the Gun Club or Bad Religion and yet uniquely their own. The bridge of the song is an especially exquisite piece of hard-rocking craftsmanship, delivering a flurry of drumbeats just before the song leans back to catch its breath as preparation for a furious charge to the end. The track is a sonic battering ram hitting with jackhammer steadiness. My ears aren’t ringing, but they are tingling a bit. I’ll take it.
