If the likes of Haim can create elegant throwbacks to nineteen-seventies pop that somehow sound modern and fresh, then surely there’s a vast tract of fertile ground in reviving and reinventing the R&B groove of the same area. That’s what “Foreign Things,” the new single from Amber Mark, sounds like to me. The cut’s rhythmic hook kicks in with a methodical assurance, and Mark’s vocals have a sweet ease that suits the lyrics about embracing the possibilities in the world around her (“Hop up on my throne, I’ll feel alive/ Feel like I could do this every night”). It’s expertly constructed and smooth as can be, a sonic flirtation brimming with confidence.
