Alynda Segarra, the creative wonder behind Hurray for the Riff Raff, knows how to pack feelings into a song. So when she explains that her new single “Pierced Arrows” is about felling discombobulated when knocked asunder by heartbreak, there’s little doubt an emotional haymaker is incoming. The track slides in nicely against peak works by Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen, but with a edge of spikiness that is all Segarra’s own. “This was the place that fell apart/ You were the one to break it/ I don’t believe in anything/ This whole fucking world is changing,” Segarra sings; it’s harsh and beautiful like a scar.

The new Hurray for the Riff Raff album, Life on Earth, is scheduled for release in February 2022.
