Following up last year’s splendid attention-getter “Silk Chiffon” is no small task. MUNA is up to it, though. On the trio’s new single, “Anything But Me,” they tap into that sweet vein of Haimian pop, all eighties-sunshine gleam. It’s a breakup song, but a celebratory one, a statement of determination: “You say that you need relief/ Well, I hope you get everything you need/ Everything but me/ Cuz I don’t want to stick around trying to work it/ When everything feels wrong/ Everything feels wrong.” Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and Naomi McPherson are doing this burgeoning indie-pop icons thing exactly right.
MUNA’s self-titled debut album is scheduled for release in June.
