Annie Blackman does indeed sound like what anyone would reasonably expect from a young, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter. “The Well,” her new single, has a tender, plaintive quality to it, spelling out the challenge of living and loving in the world as it is now. The melody is lovely and the lyrics are urbane, detailed, and cleverly devastating: “He holds my hand in contempt/ Says the second meanest thing he’s ever said/ O’ tender fistbump goodnight/ Squints like I can’t even touch his knuckles right.” It has a resonance that goes deep.
The Bug, the new EP from Annie Blackman, is out today.
