It’s been five years since the last Speedy Ortiz album, but the string of singles heralding their return have demonstrated no steps have been lost. Their latest, “Ghostwriter,” romps straight towards that sweet spot of buzzy modern rock that I find irresistible. In earning my favor, it certainly helps that the accompanying music video depicts the weary end of a night in a suburban Milwaukee club. I can attest to the accuracy of drifty smattering of applause and general all-rocked-up melancholia shown at the end. If they’d added a couple scratched-label bottles of Point Special deposited at the foot of the stage, you’d have a clear picture of any number of my college nights when we stayed to the last clanging chord of a wonderfully scruffy band’s show.
Rabbit Rabbit, the new album from Speedy Ortiz, is scheduled for release in September.
